CAIRO, 12 November 2006 — Celebrated Arab pop singer Tamer Hosny was severely reprimanded for reporting late to a performance at the recent wedding reception of a high-ranking official’s son in Cairo.

Tamer is currently doing mandatory military service after being released early from jail a few months ago. He was convicted by a military court on charges of forging documents about his military service. He was also found guilty of obtaining a passport with false information about his military service.

The organizers of the wedding told Al-Watan newspaper that Tamer was not free to pursue his acting profession as long as he was under the military service which could last two years. Despite the ban, Tamer is still reportedly working on a new film — “Omar and Salma,” which is currently being produced in Egypt. The shooting of the film had, however, started before Tamer’s trial and conviction and was delayed because of the court case.
