MOROCCO: US actor Bill Murray addressed the mass killings that have grabbed the headlines recently while accepting a lifetime achievement award at the 15th annual Marrakech Film Festival in Morocco on Friday.

Like most people around the world, the Lost in Translation star was sickened by the terrorist attacks in Paris, France last month, and he was left dumbfounded when a pair of killers shot up a disability center in San Bernardino, California on Dec. 2, and the events appear to have overshadowed his latest accolade.

After receiving a special tribute from filmmaker pal Sofia Coppola at the opening night ceremony for the Marrakech Film Festival, Bill stepped up to the podium and revealed his thoughts on the tragic incidents.

“My heart is heavy because of the events in Paris,” he said, according to Variety. “My heart is heavy because of the events in San Bernardino. It’s a strange world right now, a very strange world.”

Reciting his speech in both French and English, Bill urged people around the world to start honoring each other.

Although Bill was visibly moved while delivering his heartfelt speech, the beloved funnyman could not resist cracking a few jokes while onstage quipping, “I usually turn down lifetime homages because it means you’re dying or very sick.”

Francis Ford Coppola, who is a member of the jury for Marrakech Film Festival, was also in attendance during the opening night ceremony. The legendary filmmaker addressed the audience by sharing the reasons why the event is so special to him.

The Marrakech Film Festival started on Dec. 4 and will feature 93 films from 33 countries.
