The Jeddah Criminal Court yesterday convicted 14 people of terror-related charges, including planning to attack government buildings and training to assassinate security officials.

The 14 were found guilty of training to use poison to kill. They were accused of adopting “takfiri” ideology and supporting Al-Qaeda. They were sentenced to prison terms of between three and 22 years.

Some of the them were convicted of training to carry out kidnappings. Others were convicted of possessing arms and ammunition, forging documents and assisting wanted suspects.

The sentences begin from the day of their arrests. All were handed travel bans for the duration of their prison sentences.

The court rejected the prosecution’s call for the death penalty against some of the defendants.

At the end of the hearing, those who had served more than their prison terms were told they could file for compensation through separate lawsuit after the rulings are finalized.
