JEDDAH: A total of 290 clinics and other medical facilities, out of 310 operating in the city, face closure for failing to comply with licensing conditions stipulated in recently passed health legislation.

Amr Khayari, former vice-chairman of the health services committee at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that only about 5 percent of health facilities in Jeddah renewed their licenses. Clinics have just under a month to apply. He said the new regulations also apply to all new heath facilities. Some clinics have closed down, with the buildings now used for residential accommodation, he said.

Ahmad Balghsoun, current chairman of the health services committee, said at a meeting on Monday that owners of medical facilities would be assisted if they make an effort to approach the Health Ministry. Those who do not do so face penalties.

He said some owners have not renewed their licenses for 20 years.
