JEDDAH: A scholarship student who was declared brain dead by doctors in a US hospital following an asthma attack and recently brought to Saudi Arabia has died.

Basma El-Enzi, who was studying in Portland along with her husband, had slipped into coma and admitted to Providence Hospital there.

Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had ordered her medical evacuation, following an appeal from her husband.

El-Enzi’s death was announced at the King Khalid Hospital in Hail on Monday afternoon.

The funeral prayer will be offered after the Dhuhr prayer at the Al-Rajhi mosque in Hail on Tuesday, local media reported, adding that her body will be buried in the Sadyan graveyard.

Doctors at the hospital in Portland had set a three-day deadline for the life-support to be removed from Basma.

Still hopeful about Basma’s recovery, her husband, Hani Matar El-Enzi, made a desperate appeal for help on Tuesday last, when the deadline ended, when the deputy crown prince came to the rescue.
