Jeddah Islamic Port handled 10.8 million tons of goods during April and May, a 4.5 percent increase from the same period last year.

Director General of the port, Capt. Saher Al-Tahlawi, said the two months represent the season’s peak because of the upcoming Ramadan and Haj.

Al-Tahlawi said demand for food and livestock increases at this time of the year resulting in the arrival of more ships and the handling of more containers.

Imports of frozen food, barley, sugar and rice amounted to over 1.9 million tons, an increase of 15 percent compared to over 1.6 million tons last year, he said. The port handled over 900,000 head of livestock, which is about 5 percent higher than last year.

A performance report of the two months shows the port handled 796 ships, 49,265 passengers, 914,755 head of livestock, 116,283 cars and trucks, over two million tons of construction materials — cement, steel, wood and others — and over 1.9 million tons of food.
