JEDDAH: Residents of Khulais province have called on the government to stop the construction of warehouses and workshops in the middle of three neighborhoods.

Activists on social media living in the province launched a hashtag #Disastrous Project in Khulais to highlight what they described as harmful to the health of locals. The project is being planned at Al-Hijra Road, according to a report in a local publication.

Mohammad Al-Sahafi, a resident of the province, said that residents had last year objected to the project in the neighborhoods of Garan, Nuzha and Al-Maqarand because it was 8 meters away from some homes. He said the project had resulted in environmental, health and security challenges. There was also significant traffic in the area. Citizens have complained to the mayor of Jeddah, Makkah governorate and the royal court, he said.

He said the mayor has asked for a special committee to be set up by the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs to deal with the issue. The ministry has responded and said the matter is being dealt with.
