JEDDAH: A select team of the Islamic Corporation for the Development of Private Sector (ICD), affiliated to the Islamic Development Bank Group (IDB), is traveling to Slovenia to participate in an international football tournament of banks, insurances and financial institutions.
The tournament dubbed Champions Bank 2016 is scheduled Sept. 23 to 25 in Portorose, an Adriatic-Mediterranean coastal settlement in the municipality of Piran in southwestern Slovenia, and attracted 64 teams from around the globe.
As part of its preparations for the overseas event, ICD played tuneup games against local teams in the city. On July 31, ICD, an all Saudi team, defeated Senate team of Jeddah 7-5, before also winning another tuneup against King Faisal Specialist Hospital 8-5.
ICD CEO and General Manager Khaled Al-Aboodi wished the team success during the tournament in Slovenia.
According to the Facebook page of Champions Bank 2016, MasterCard is the title sponsor. Europ Assistance, Armundia Group (worldwide software solutions), South Eastern Europe and All Funds Bank are gold sponsors with Garman Technical Sportswear as technical sponsor. Teams will play 23 minutes per match with unlimited free number of substitutions. To officiate the matches are former Italian Serie A and international UEFA referees including the popular Italian ref Pierluigi Collina, who will referee the final match. After the group stage, the tournament segues into the knockout phase quarterfinals, semifinals and final.
