6 regional films to screen at the UAE’s CineMAS festival

Abu Dhabi’s CineMAS festival is returning for its third year with an exciting lineup of films to screen at Manarat Al-Saadiyat island from June 6-12. 

  1. ‘An Evening with Laila’
    ‘An Evening with Laila’
    Kuwaiti filmmaker Haya Alghanim’s documentary tells the story of Laila Abdulaziz, a pioneer of music in the Gulf region who had a vision for the future that no one was ready for, not even herself.
  2. ‘Beirut, the Encounter’
    ‘Beirut, the Encounter’
    Late Lebanese filmmaker Borhane Alaouié’s 1982 film follows a man and woman during the Lebanese civil war as they overcome checkpoints and other hurdles to see each other one last time.
  3. ‘Yuni’
    ‘Yuni’
    The film, by Indonesian director Kamilia Andini, tells the story of a teenage girl who is determined to pursue her education, but is being pressured to get married.
  4. ‘Before the Dying of the Light’
    ‘Before the Dying of the Light’
    The documentary, by director Ali Essafi, pays homage to the art scene of 1970s Morocco, viewed from the perspective of the artists.

    ‘Don’t Get Too Comfortable’
    In the short documentary, Yemeni filmmaker Shaima Al-Tamimi shares an introspective letter to her deceased grandfather reflecting on her ancestral journey of migration.

    Egyptian filmmaker Ayten Amin’s film explores how social media affects the lives of young girls approaching adulthood.
