Even as tensions in south Kashmir following Saturday killings were yet to die down, one more youth fell to the bullets of Indian security force in Shopian on Thursday afternoon, that further exacerbated the volatile situation.

Massive protests erupted in Shopian a few hours after the four-day long curfew was lifted this morning.

Hundreds of angry youth spilled on to the streets in Shopian town and marched toward the Indian paramilitary central reserve police force (CRPF) camp demanding its removal from Gagran village. The villagers alleged the soldiers had shot at and killed the four youth on Saturday last.

The police have confirmed that three of the youths killed had no record of militancy and that a high-level of enquiry has been ordered into the incident.

The paramilitary soldiers of the camp fired again this afternoon at the protestors killing a 25-year old youth on the spot identified as Rafiq Ahmad and wounding eight others.

The wounded youth were shifted to hospital for treatment.

Curfew was reimposed in the district to contain the situation, which became volatile again after the incident.

Indian police and paramilitary reinforcements were moved into the town late this afternoon to enforce the curfew.

“We are collecting details about the firing incident and in the meantime we have re-imposed curfew in Shopian,” said Bashir Ahmad Bhat, district magistrate Shopian.

The local government had drawn a lot of flak from separatist camp for the killing of youth in CRPF firing at Gagran in Shopian hours before the Zubin Mehta concert in capital Srinagar on Saturday.

The hard-line separatist leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, has condemned the killing of the youth and called for a protest strike on Thursday.

A march to Shopian called by Geelani was foiled yesterday by the authorities by imposing curfew in the three south Kashmir districts of Shopian, Kulgam and Pulwama.
