The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to sweep into power, all exit polls about the just-concluded nine-phase polling of the Indian general elections 2014 announced on Monday, implying that Narendra Modi would be India’s next prime minister.

India was agog with only one new development on Monday night: results of exit polls. The actual results are to be announced on May 16.

Exit polls have always been a confusing and often misleading business in India. They don’t promise to be any different this time around — at least in terms of confusion.

According to research group C-Voter, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would get 289 seats, while the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government would just get 101 seats.

C-Voter said its poll was based on a sample of 166,901 randomly selected respondents in all 543 seats. The pollster said its margin of error is +\-3 percent at a national level. Talking about the Congress alone, the grand old party has returned a figure of 114 in the 543-member Lok Sabha in its worst-ever performance in 1999. So, this will be much lower than the Congress party’s rock-bottom show in India’s electoral history, according to this exit poll.

The magic number for getting clear majority in the 543-member Lok Sabha is 272. Another poll, by Cicero for the India Today group, also gave almost similar figures. It gave the opposition between 261 and 283 seats.

Unsurprisingly, the Indian stock markets are on fire anticipating Modi’s victory and rallied to record highs for a second consecutive session on Monday, with the BSE Sensex topping 23,500 and the broader Nifty hitting a record high of 7,014.

However, the forecast of Chanakya has given 291 plus seats to the BJP alone and just 57 to the Congress. The NDA would win 340 and UPA 70, it Chanakya is to be believed.
