JIZAN, 9 August — An emergency has been declared in Jizan because of the potential danger from the opening of the Jizan dam to reduce its load, the Okaz newspaper reported yesterday. Many in the region fear that flooding may destroy houses and crops. Brig. Masawi Al-Hekami, acting director of civil defense, said his department has worked out a comprehensive plan to deal with the situation. Abdu Habashi, director of Saudi Red Crescent Society, said his organization was fully prepared to handle any situation that might occur. The 42.6-meter high dam holds 71 million cubic meters of water, enough to irrigate 600 hectares.
