GAZA, 22 August — Palestinian President Yasser Arafat will meet with his Syrian counterpart Bashar Assad in Damascus next week, Asharq Al-Awsat Arabic newspaper reported today, quoting Palestinian sources. The paper said it would be the first official visit by Arafat to Syria since 1988. Khaled Al-Fahoum, former chairman of the Palestinian National Council, said the summit meeting would take place either Sunday or Monday, after Arafat’s visit to China. He said the agenda of the talks will focus on Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338 (which will form the basis for establishing an independent Palestinian state) and ways of supporting the intifada.
