DHAKA, 2 October — The Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led four-party alliance is heading toward massive victory in yesterday’s general election that was held peacefully with huge turn out across the country. The opposition alliance of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia is leading in most of the seats of which results were announced by the Election Commission early today.
Results of eight Dhaka constituencies were rather delayed as the commission could announce only of few centers till writing this report at 12-45 a.m. According to the reports sent by our correspondents late last night, most of the Awami League stalwarts who are contesting from more than one constituencies were trailing much behind their lesser known rivals of the two alliances.
On the other hand, most of the BNP stalwarts were leading with huge margins against their arch rivals of Awami League of outgoing Prime Minister Hasina Wajed. Among influential Awami League leaders, former Industries Minister Tofail Ahmad, former Home and Telecommunications Minister Muhammad Nasim, former Food Minister Amir Hossain Amu, former Commerce Minister M. Abdul Jalil, former Chief Whip of the parliament Abul Hasanat Abdullah and former Environment Minister Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, former State Minister Ashiqur Rahman and Lt. Gen. (retired) M. Shafiullah were trailing much behind their rival candidates. Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury has lost to former minister KM Obaidur Rahman who is fighting from jail.
On the other hand, among BNP stalwarts, former Finance Minister M. Saifur Rahman, Col. (retired) Oli Ahmad, Barrister Nazmul Huda and Shahjahan Siraj were leading against their rival candidates of Awami League.
Millions of voters went to the polls across Bangladesh yesterday to choose a 300-seat parliament in an election seen as a showdown between two former prime ministers and longtime foes.
