DAMMAM, 20 November — The Eastern Province is reeling under an unusually cold spell and the Met Office says there is the possibility of rain in the next 24 hours and temperatures may drop further.
The weather conditions took residents by surprise, as during this time of the year the weather is normally pleasant. The sky has been overcast since Sunday, marking the advent of winter.
Senior citizens say they have not experienced such weather for years.
Although there were no reports of flight cancellations or delays, motorists had a difficult time on the Dammam-Alkhobar Highway. The effect of the weather was apparent on both the Dammam and Alkhobar Corniche, both of which were deserted. The Met Office said visibility will improve but the temperature may drop further. It has also warned divers of an unusually rough sea.
In the Western Province, the sun is still out during the daytime but it is becoming noticeably colder during the evenings. Thousands of Umrah pilgrims dressed in the traditional ihram can be seen shivering on the streets after iftar.
