JEDDAH, 27 March — A new atlas of Saudi Arabia, the most comprehensive and detailed map of its kind, has just been published by the engineering consultancy office of Zaki M. Farsi.
The 240-page atlas has several pages devoted to indexes of geographical and demographic features. It contains the names and locations of over 5,000 cities, towns, villages and hamlets, in addition to 10,000 natural features.
The atlas is a collection of previous maps prepared by Zaki Farsi over a period of two decades.
These include digital maps of the Kingdom’s main cities and commercial service maps containing more than 6,500 types of services. There are also separate guides featuring detailed maps for cities, which cover important services, in addition to wall and pocket maps as well as a Farsi diary.
“The massive development that has been taking place in the Kingdom over the past few years has had an impact on every aspect of life here, including the production of maps and charts. We have also benefited from modern technology, and have used it to improve our cartography. The result is this atlas — which caps 20 years of work,” Farsi told Arab News.
Farsi, an architect and developer, was the former major of Jeddah and in that capacity greatly contributed to the development and beautification of the city.
“The atlas adds a qualitative feature to map compilation in the Kingdom and the information it contains will help officials, researchers and specialists to better plan future projects,” Farsi added.
