DAMMAM, 26 April — A criminal court in Doha has sentenced the director general of a Qatar-based company to 10 years in jail for breach of trust and embezzlement.
The trial of George Rizk, director general of Al-Qatar City Company, was conducted in absentia, as he left the country with most of the company money three years ago, abandoning his 1,200 investors, who included 500 Saudis.
It was later discovered that the man, who had left for London, had cheated them, and they filed a suit against Rizk at a Doha court. Since he has not been traced, Qatari police have sought the assistance of Interpol.
In his absence, lawyers representing the investors demanded the freezing of the company’s assets and properties personally belonging to Rizk. It is suspected that he also owns property under false names.
The Saudi investors had also invested heavily in the City Invest Company and the City Forks, both managed by Rizk.
Najeeb Al-Naeemi, former law minister of Qatar, represented an earlier case brought by the Saudi investors against the company at the Qatari High Court.
