BOMBAY, 28 April — On Monday the BSE closed at 3,390.25. The moods were buoyant after Standard & Poor’s said it had no immediate plan to review India’s rating despite the resurgence of violence in Gujarat. Hindustan Lever was back on the “investment buyers” list at a six-month low price of Rs.201.50. Gujarat Ambuja Cements faced selling due to its poor Q4 results, a 9.27 percent drop in net profit to Rs.543.8 million.

On Tuesday the BSE closed at 3,403.82. Reliance Industries (RIL) and Reliance Petroleum (RPL) were the toast of the day. RIL, for Q4, recorded a 11.46 percent fall in net profit to Rs.6.72 billion on sales of 63.19 billion. RPL, posted a 5.5 percent rise in net profit to Rs.4.05 billion on sales of Rs.76.20 billion. Telco was up on reports that its loss-making Indica car project would break even in FY 2004. ACC was up at Rs.154.15 when for the fiscal 2001-02, it posted a 128.14 percent jump in net profit to Rs.1,304.3 million. On the other hand, Castrol India faced selling despite having posted a 31.69 percent rise in net profit for Q4.

On Wednesday the BSE closed at 3,411.92. Zee Telefilms was the “star” of the day. Satyam Computer was down Rs.266.20 despite it reporting a 3.42 percent rise in net profit for Q4. BSES was hammered down on reports that its accumulated losses were close to the Rs.10.00 billion-mark.

On Thursday the BSE closed at 3,359.64. Gujarat Ambuja Cements was the major loser amid fears that the violence in Gujarat may affect the company’s financial performance in the current quarter. Heavyweight stocks such as ITC (Rs.611.40), RPL (Rs.25.35), RIL (Rs.287.05) and Hindustan Lever (Rs.209.10) also accounted for the fall in the Sensex. TISCO and Telco bucked the trend and reported modest gains.

On Friday the BSE closed at 3,371.70.

Out of the 1,602 issues traded on the exchange, declines outnumbered advances, with 734 losers and 723 gainers. 145 issues remained unchanged.

Gold was at Rs.5,090/- per 10 gms and silver was at Rs.7,870/- per Kg.

US dollar was at Rs.48.97, pound sterling at Rs.71.28, euro at Rs.44.09, UAE dirham at Rs.13.31, Kuwaiti dinar at Rs.159.72, Bahraini dinar at Rs.129.67, Saudi riyal at Rs.13.04, Qatari riyal at Rs.13.43 and Omani riyal at Rs.126.98.
