While the United States strives to strengthen the pillars of its empire, the European Union is working to restore confidence of the south Mediterranean countries by establishing closer relations with them.
On April 22, the Spanish city of Valencia hosted a conference of foreign ministers of the countries overlooking the Mediterranean. The conference discussed political and security issues as well as the deteriorating situation in the Middle East.
As a result of the insistence of the Arab group, the conference discussed the tragedy of the Palestinians and the latest developments in the Arab-Israeli conflict. But the conference ended without taking any action to pressure Sharon the Butcher to stop his aggression on the Palestinians or to protect the Palestinians facing human rights violations.
The resolutions were restricted to urging, condemning and demanding, fearing that any strong measure might anger their big boss, the United States. A few days after the conference, the German chancellor said the European Union had not decided to impose any sanctions on Israel. Germany, he said, did not even think of Israeli sanctions, fearing that the country would be branded anti-Semitic. By failing to take a bold stand at the Valencia conference, the European Union paved the way for the US to impose its hegemony on the Middle East. It also gave Washington an opportunity to redraw the region’s map in a way that suits its interests.
After the Valencia event, the Qaddafi International Foundation organized a conference of European and Mediterranean countries. It was attended by more than 110 dignitaries and intellectuals from European and Arab and African states. They discussed ways to promote an atmosphere of coexistence among people of the region, respecting the dignity of humanity and upholding the culture of peace by promoting dialogue of religions and cultures and enhancing cultural, social and economic exchanges.
The Tripoli meet, which was a non-governmental affair unlike the Valentina conference, allowed the participants to discuss vital topics related to the future of Mediterranean countries without fear.
While analyzing world affairs in the backdrop of the American hegemony, Dr. Mauloud Al-Muhaddabi, a professor of international law, said: "The international society is ruled by 15 members of the United Nations — the members of the Security Council. The five permanent members of the council control these 15 countries while a single arrogant member with unlimited powers — the United States — influence the decisions of the five."
Subsequently, the Europeans are unable to take an independent decision on vital international issues. For example, when Sharon the Butcher did not allow the European delegation to meet with Palestine President Yasser Arafat, the European Union did not utter a single word against that action!!
This inaction came after it had imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe citing violations in local elections, when poll results appeared contrary to its interests.
The European governments know that Israel has committed war crimes and practiced state terrorism but they did not dare to say a word against the Jewish state fearing that it would antagonize Washington and they would be accused of being anti-Semitic.
