JEDDAH, 24 May — Residents of south Jeddah have been complaining about the municipal inaction to solve the problems caused by sewage and industrial effluents in this part of the city.
The sewage sends out a foul smell in the area and causes serious hygienic and environmental problems, residents told Okaz newspaper. The residents in the area complained that the sewage serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other disease-spreading insects.
Nasal catarrh has become very common in the area because of the environmental pollution, they said. Building material left after construction works creates further environmental hazards, particularly during the rainy season.
Maatuq Al-Bogri, a Saudi living in this part of the city, wondered when the appropriate departments in the municipality and the Ministry of Industry and Electricity would take action to save the residents in the area from issues related to environmental pollution.
An official of the municipality said: “There is a huge drainage treatment project in the pipeline, which will solve the problems arising from industrial and other sewage.”
