JEDDAH, 14 June — The Arab Gulf Program for United Nations Development Organizations (AGFUND) joined hands with two key UN agencies to provide aid to the Palestinian people during a meeting in Jordan.
AGFUND, headed by Prince Talal ibn Abdul Aziz, is launching the initiative with the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) and the UN Development Program (UNDP).
The aim of the cooperation finalized at a two-day meeting that closed on Wednesday in Amman is to provide “urgent assistance to the Palestinian people”, a statement from AGFUND said.
Two committees comprising members from AGFUND, UNRWA and the UNDP were set up during talks in Amman which were also attended by a representative of the Islamic Development Bank, the statement said.
The committees will aim to provide urgent medical assistance to the Palestinian people in the Israeli-occupied territories by bolstering clinics and first-aid medical centers and blood banks, it said.
Psychological care will also be provided for children who have lost parents and relatives during the Palestinian uprising against Israel as well as medical assistance to those injured and physically impaired in the conflict.
AGFUND was established in 1980 and has supported a total of 743 projects until 2000 in 126 countries worldwide.
According to its website, the fund, with the help of Arab and Gulf countries, provides “support for sustainable human development efforts” through health, education and environmental projects as well as relief assistance to victims of wars, armed conflicts and natural disasters.
