RIYADH, 5 August — Maneh ibn Hammad Al-Johani, secretary-general of the World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY) and a member of the Shoura Council, died yesterday in a road accident near the King Khaled International Airport. He was 60.
Johani was on his way to the airport to take a flight to Jeddah for a meeting with Prince Abdullah, the regent. He was admitted to KKIA’s Community Services Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Funeral prayers for Johani will be held at Al-Rajhi Mosque here today after Asr prayers.
Prince Abdullah has urged security authorities to provide him a report immediately on the circumstances that led to the accident which took place at 8.30 a.m. after Johani’s Mercedes car overturned following a tire blowout.
Saleh ibn Humaid, president of the Shoura Council, said Johani’s death was a big loss for the council and the nation, adding that he was an active member of the 120-member consultative body.
Saleh Al-Wohaibi, WAMY’s assistant secretary-general, told Arab News that the WAMY chief was to brief Prince Abdullah on the organization’s activities. He was going to update the regent on WAMY’s upcoming 9th international conference on “Muslim Youth and Globalization” to be held in Riyadh from Oct. 22 to 25.
Wohaibi will serve as acting secretary-general until a successor to Johani is elected at a meeting of WAMY’s board of trustees.
