JEDDAH, 18 August — An expatriate’s quick fingers not only brought his world crashing down, but also burned the trust of many of his compatriots who will be a bit wary of extending a helping hand to a stranger — even if he is of the same nationality. A Bangladeshi worker, who exploited the generosity of his compatriots by stealing the money and iqama (residence permit) of one of his new friends, found the hard way that nimble fingers and nimble feet are not necessarily enough to make a fast buck without being caught, Al-Jazirah reported yesterday. The Bangladeshi, on arrival at the Oqlat Al-Saqur village, was asked by his sponsor to stay with his neighbor’s workers, also Bangladeshi, in order for him to learn the work as well as some Arabic. The workers wholeheartedly welcomed the newcomer, provided him with a delicious dinner and also a place to sleep. The next morning they left for the farm where they were employed, leaving the newcomer in their room. Seeing opportunity knocking, the newcomer searched the belongings of his compatriots, took the money he found there as well as an iqama. He then set out for Riyadh on a public transport bus, using the iqama of the farm worker whom he resembled. When the workers returned, they found their money missing and the newcomer nowhere in sight. One of the workers also found his iqama had been taken. They quickly informed their sponsor, who immediately went to the public transport depot to inquire whether somebody with the iqama of a Bangladeshi worker had traveled to Riyadh. The sponsor then informed the Bangladeshi’s sponsor who was in Riyadh. The sponsor went to the bus depot and waited for the thief and handed him over to the police.
