JEDDAH, 22 November 2002 — Police have arrested a drug trafficker from a village in Asir province after a gunfight, Al-Watan newspaper reported yesterday.

The man was wanted by the police in connection with an attack on a police team four months ago. He sustained a leg injury in the gunfight with the police and is under treatment in a hospital.

The police were chasing this ex-convict for several months across the Kingdom for assaulting a police officer while arresting his brother on some other charge. After shooting the officer he escaped to the Eastern Province and from there fled to Riyadh. Later he went to Makkah and then to Jeddah.

At the time of arrest he carried three guns and a certain quantity of narcotic drugs. He used stolen cars to market the illegal drugs.

In another incident in south Dhahran, a Border Guard was murdered by his colleague following a quarrel on Monday. A police team led by Lt. Col. Abdullah Al-Qahtani arrested the suspectwho had fled the scene.
