JEDDAH, 29 November 2002 — There were fireworks indeed in a Khamis Mushayt household with the mother and her son bearing the brunt. And it was the son’s nimble fingers that lit the spark. The mother was divorced and son expelled after both were given a beating by the father. It all started with the father inviting a passerby to share the iftar (break fast) meals with him, according to Al-Madinah newspaper. The boy, who was outside playing, saw a small bag on the driver’s seat of the guest’s car. Curious, the boy opened the door and then the bag, which contained some money. He took the money and brought some fire crackers and other toys. The guest found the money missing on returning to the car, and made an issue of it. The step-father rounded on the boy and thrashed out a confession. He then turned on his wife, whom he accused of spoiling her son, and beat her before divorcing her.
