JEDDAH, 1 December 2002 — Students of Imam Mohammed ibn Saud University in Riyadh have their cars parked in the campus stolen or broken into, Al-Jazirah reported yesterday.
They have complained that the crimes occur right under the nose of security guards posted to protect the vehicles in the parking lot.
Fahd Al-Rozain, a student, said the windows of his car were broken and the spare tire was stolen in the first week of Ramadan. When he complained to security officials in the university they said they did not have enough potential to safeguard students’ cars. Then the student took his complaint to Al-Hamra police station close to the university. The police said as the crime took place on the university campus which has its own security staff there was nothing they could do. Rozain said a few days later his car was stolen and now he wondered where he should complain. Several other students have had similar experience.
Meanwhile, four Arab expatriates and two Saudis were publicly lashed for committing theft in Lith 100 kilometers from Makkah. The expatriates, who were guilty of stealing a car, received 500 lashes each, while the Saudis were given 100 lashes each for stealing cattle.
