JEDDAH, 23 December 2002 — A fire broke out at noon yesterday in one of the KAAU girls campus buildings in Jeddah.
The building, the oldest and busiest on the campus, was evacuated soon after students noticed smoke billowing from certain areas of the structure. The building did not have a fire alarm system.
Civil Defense personnel, who rushed to the spot, put out the fire, which according to a source at the campus, was caused by an electrical short-circuit. No injury was reported.
Damages were still to be estimated. The source told Arab News that the short-circuit was apparently caused by water leaking into the electrical junction box at the building. Buildings near the fire-hit structure were also evacuated for fear that the blaze would spread.
