JEDDAH, 29 October 2003 — Municipality officials have intensified their inspections of butchers during Ramadan and shut down 36 outlets for violating health and hygiene standards. The teams also busted 15 unlicensed butchers operating at private residences, according to a report in Eqtisadiah, a sister publication of Arab News. Over the past year, nearly 1,500 out of a total of 270,000 slaughtered animals were removed from the market for hygiene reasons.
