JEDDAH, 11 November 2003 — Obesity, especially among Saudi and other Gulf children, has become a problem for medical and nutrition experts.
“And yet nothing much is being done to prevent, check or counter obesity,” a nutrition expert said yesterday. “There is no effort to make children change their eating habits which are the major cause of obesity. They eat fast-food which is high in cholesterol, and they do not exercise which would burn up the calories,” Professor Abdulrahman Obaid Musaiger, head of the Bahrain-based Arab Center for Nutrition, said here yesterday. — K.S.
