JEDDAH, 25 November 2003 — This year’s Eid festivities, scheduled to begin today, will be full of surprises for Jeddah’s residents and visitors alike, says Prince Faisal ibn Abdul Majeed, head of the organizing committee.
“There are 35 programs, each carefully chosen by the organizing committee to present a new kind of excitement and create a carnival atmosphere around the city,” the prince said.
Prince Faisal, who was putting the final touches to the opening show, told reporters some 35 events would appeal to all members of the family especially children.
He said that the festival’s main purpose was to present Jeddah with a showcase featuring a diverse range of activities, not least in order to attract visitors and stimulate domestic tourism.
The festival features air shows, poetry sessions, sports activities, car racing and theater in addition to a variety of programs at the city’s numerous amusement parks.
The festival begins today with what promises to be a spectacular musical and laser show and fireworks on the Corniche.
“A musical extravaganza entitled ‘The Gate of the Two Holy Mosques’ is going to feature an array of famous Saudi musicians and folk dance troupes,” the prince said.
“The opening show is bound to captivate the imagination of visitors and residents alike,” Prince Faisal said.
All visitors to the Northern Corniche will be able to watch the spectacle on giant TV screens installed in various parts of the city’s seaside thoroughfare.
King Fahd Coastal City will see a number of stage shows, the chairman said, but added that only women and children would be allowed to see them. However, Saudi Television as well as ART television will broadcast festival highlights.
Prince Faisal announced that this year’s Eid festivities are being financed by Makkah Governor Prince Abdul Majeed.
