JEDDAH, 12 December 2003 — Pakistan’s Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali arrived in the Kingdom yesterday for a two-day visit.
Jamali arrived in Jeddah from Geneva, where he attended the World Summit on the Information Society. In a speech at the summit he called for the creation of a global information society that would ensure equal development opportunities for all.
He stressed the need for a global accord on information technology and for a mechanism allowing developing countries to develop their IT infrastructure.
Jamali said his government was harnessing digital technology for broader economic welfare. Citing deregulation and privatization in Pakistan, he invited the IT companies and other businesses to benefit from Pakistan’s investment-friendly environment.
On the sidelines of the summit, Jamali met UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Supachai Panichpakdi, director-general of the World Trade Organization.
