JEDDAH, 17 December 2003 — Representatives of various Maranao organizations have been invited a meeting to discuss plans to hold a “Kakilang Competition” (Maranao Band and Singing Festival Competition). The meeting will be held on Dec. 18, 2003 starting at 9 p.m., at the Tropicana Restaurant on Tahliah St. in Jeddah, said Linogaranao “Bobby” Mapandi.
“Kalilang” is an indigenous musical extravaganza showcasing traditional poetry, song and dances, accompanied by a resounding rendition of the “kulintang” orchestra.
Unlike the most commonly used musical instruments like the piano, guitar, drums and bugles, participants uses ancient or handmade antique instruments called “kulintang” (cylophones), gongs and cymbals, played by 4 or 5 performers wearing traditional colorful Muslim costumes.
