ABHA, 30 May 2004 — Married women prisoners here are to be allowed private visits, according to a local press report.

The head of the Abha Prison, Maj. Ali Al-Shehri, told Al-Madinah newspaper the region was also considering alternatives to prison, apparently as part of a progressive penal policy that also includes a rehabilitation program for female prisoners.

The program, which comes under the direct supervision of the Kingdom’s Department of Prisons, consists mainly of various religious programs as well as Qur’an lessons. On top of that, the prison administration will organize awareness programs, counseling and summer activities.
