RIYADH, 6 July 2004 — Makkah Governor Prince Abdul Majeed recently laid the cornerstone for 200 homes intended for the poor in the region under a project launched by Prince Alwaleed ibn Talal, chairman of the Kingdom Holding Company (KHC).
The units are intended for residents of Qunfuda and Laith and bring the total number of homes for the poor currently under construction throughout the Kingdom to 1,400. All the units are being financed by Prince Alwaleed as part of his plan to help the poor Kingdomwide.
After the ceremony, Prince Alwaleed signed an agreement with the Saudi contractor who had won the tender for the project.
Prince Abdul Majeed praised the prince and KHC for their goodwill and humanitarian work throughout Saudi Arabia, and for including the Makkah region in their plans.
Earlier, the cornerstone for another 200 homes was laid in Arar in the northern part of the Kingdom.
Prince Alwaleed has pledged to build 10,000 homes over a ten-year period at the rate of 1,000 units per year. Last year, the prince’s housing projects covered six regions: Asir (200 units), Hail (100 units), Madinah (200 units), Jouf (200 units), Baha (100 units) and Jizan (200 units).
