RIYADH, 16 July 2004 — The women’s branch of the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) approved a new women’s committee to be headed by Princess Fahda bint Bandar Al-Saud and Huda Al-Jeraisy as her deputy. Seven businesswomen will also act as members.
The committee’s aim is to diagnose the problems facing businesswomen and female investors in Riyadh and their possible solutions. Some of the problems are related to gender discrimination in Saudi Arabia such as legitimate agent issue in which females must have a male agent to represent them in governmental organizations.
Other issues are strictly related to the economy such as creating new job opportunities, providing professional and legal consultation for female investors. They will also look at preparing new industrial projects in line with a plan that has been approved by the Council of Ministers to encourage women’s role in the Saudi economy.
Princess Haila Al-Farhan, the manager of the ladies branch of RCCI, said, “The committee held its first meeting last Tuesday and discussed the intended work plan and ways to launch their activities that aim to support the branch in giving the best service for all businesswomen in Riyadh.”
The committee’s seven other members are: Princess Hind bint Abdulrahman Al-Saud, Areej Al-Brahim, Nura Al-Amri, Widad bint Sa’eed, Fayza Abal Khail , Munira Al-Sulaiman and Aziza Al-Khatib .
Princess Haila also explained that several sub-committees representing different female economic sectors will branch off from this primary committee.
