Remains of Saudi, 7 Kuwaitis Found in Iraq Mass Graves

KUWAIT CITY, 19 July 2004 — The remains of seven Kuwaitis and one Saudi national captured during Iraq’s 1990-91 occupation of Kuwait have been found in mass graves in Iraq, the Kuwaiti news agency KUNA reported yesterday.

Since the ouster of Saddam’s Hussein’s regime last year, a Kuwaiti team has been searching mass graves in Iraq for more than 600 missing prisoners of war.

Team spokesman Fayed Al-Anizi told KUNA that forensic and DNA tests performed by Kuwait’s Criminal Evidence Department confirmed the identities of the eight men who had been arrested by Iraqi troops in 1990, and whose remains were subsequently found in the graves.

The latest identification brought the number of PoWs whose remains have been identified by the team to 155. An estimated 450 others, mostly Kuwaitis, are still unaccounted for.
