JEDDAH, 21 July 2004 — Transport Minister Dr. Jabara Al-Seraisry stressed the need for improving the public transport system, both in-city and inter-city. He said efforts are under way to reform the system in Makkah, Jeddah and Dammam.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting in Jeddah with Traffic Department Director Brig. Abdul Aziz Al-Obailan and officials at the departments of roads and transportation in Makkah region, the minister said studies are being conducted on the feasibility of introducing a public transport system. Options include fast trains which will serve the urban population and also help reduce congestion and pollution.

A committee entrusted with studying the proposal has traveled to several countries and would visit others to gather information about the best means for implementing the proposed system.

The minister also discussed Saudization of taxi drivers with the officials. A number of departments whose efforts have led to the success of the Saudization drive were honored during the meeting.

Later, the transport minister acknowledged the importance of general transport between cities and the importance of improving transportation between major conurbations.
