JEDDAH, 5 August 2004 — Police are investigating the circumstances that led to a bloody fight between members of two families during a wedding ceremony in Taif’s Naseem neighborhood on Tuesday.

According to Al-Madinah newspaper, 10 members of the families of the bride and bridegroom were injured while an onlooker fell unconscious during the bizarre incident.

Patrol police intervened to quell the quarrel and the injured were taken to King Faisal Hospital in Taif for treatment. Police prevented relatives of the two families from entering the hospital to avoid further clashes.

The paper said the two parties used knives, sticks and stones to attack each other.

In a similar incident in the southern city of Abha, two families quarreled during wedding when the bridegroom went to a hall allocated for women.

The problem was solved amicably when it became clear that the groom had come to settle a conflict between two families.

Also on Tuesday, a Saudi woman who had gone to attend a marriage ceremony in Beesh fell into a septic tank, sustaining injuries. Civil defense officers later rescued the woman.
