KUWAIT, 5 August 2004 — Kuwait said yesterday it was hunting a fourth fugitive suspected of links to Al-Qaeda and a network enlisting youths to fight US-led forces in Iraq.
The Interior Ministry, in a statement carried by state media, called on the public to inform authorities about the whereabouts of Mohsen Al-Fadli, a 25-year-old Kuwaiti.
A security source told Reuters that Fadli was being sought based on information provided by US security officials, but did not elaborate.
A Kuwaiti appeals court in April quashed Fadli’s conviction by a lower court of belonging to Osama Bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda network.
Fadli is sought for questioning along with three other Kuwaitis named last month by authorities for allegedly belonging to a group that mobilized youths to fight US-led forces in Iraq and Kuwait. Sixteen people have been detained in the case.
Fadli and the three fugitives are thought to be in Kuwait, which was a launchpad for last year’s US-led war on Iraq.
Kuwait has tightened security and launched a crackdown on extremists opposed to the presence of US forces in the country.
