DHAKA, 10 August 2004 — A special court in Dhaka yesterday sentenced six people to death for the murder of a child in the capital’s Sutrapur area. The condemned — Momin, 18, Milon, 20, Mithu alias S.K. Mahiuddin, 22, Swapan, 20, Rubel, 18, and Ziaur Rahman Zia, 24 — wailed on hearing the verdict sentencing them to death for the killing of Maria, a 3-year-old girl who died in 2002.
The court acquitted Hatem in absentia.
According to the prosecution, on Nov. 27, 2002 the convicts chased and threw a bomb on their rival Farooque Hossain at Tipu Sultan Road. The bomb missed its target and injured Maria, who later died in hospital.
Maria and her father, Faroque Hossain Belal, had come out on the street to buy iftar when the attack occurred.
