DUBAI, 12 August 2004 — Construction has begun for a new 370 million-dirham campus for female students at Zayed University in Dubai.
“The new premises, to be ready by September 2006, will accommodate the existing number of students as well as the projected growth in the number of students in the future,” said Qasim Sultan, director-general of Dubai municipality.
Construction will be carried out in two phases, with the first accommodating some 5,000 students until 2013 and the second accommodating 2,000 more until 2017, with provisions for expanding the premises to admit more students. “The first phase will cater for all the needs of female students until the year 2010. The future expansion of the university will not in anyway affect the education process in the campus,” he said.
The design of the three-story building is unique in that the students can move around inside the campus without being exposed to the hot and humid weather.
Zayed University comprises six colleges that offer bachelor degrees. The faculties at the university include arts and humanities, management sciences, communications and media sciences, education, home science and information systems.
