JEDDAH, 18 August 2004 — The Consulate General of Bangladesh has assured Bangladeshis here that banks back home are not deducting flood rehabilitation levy from remittances.

The community members are concerned over rumors that Bangladeshi banks are deducting 10 percent of foreign remittances as flood rehabilitation levy. “In this connection the consulate wishes to inform all concerned that no Bangladeshi bank is deducting such a levy from foreign remittances,” the consulate said, adding that all Bangladeshis should continue to send remittances through official channels.
