MANAMA, 29 August 2004 — A 29-year-old Saudi is in police custody after he was involved in a hit and run accident in Manama early yesterday morning.
The Saudi driver hit a delivery motorcycle after running a red light and fled the scene of the accident leaving the 28-year-old Indian driver, Shajahan Puthiyapurayil, unattended.
Shajahan, who is from Kerala, suffered a broken left shoulder and injuries to the head and face. An ambulance rushed him to a nearby hospital. He was said to be in a stable condition yesterday.
The Saudi driver was taken into police custody minutes later after two Bahraini youngsters gave chase and stopped him at a dead-end street.
They managed to take his car keys and informed the police after they discovered that he was intoxicated. Sources said that the man worked as a teacher.
