NEW YORK, 10 September 2004 — The New York Times published yesterday black and white photos of nearly all the 1,000 US soldiers killed in Iraq, noting that they represented “the highest toll since the Vietnam War.”
The pictorial “Roster of the Dead” covered 2 1/4 pages of the newspaper’s main section, listing the fallen in alphabetical order, without reference to service or rank. The Times tribute came after the death toll in Iraq crossed the symbolic 1,000 mark on Tuesday. An accompanying breakdown showed that more than 50 percent of those killed were aged between 18 and 24, 70 percent of the dead as white, 13 percent black and 12 percent Hispanic.
