I thought I knew quite a lot about colors and their affects until I started reading about color therapy. The more I read and researched, the more it surprised me. During my research on color therapy, I learned about Valerie Logan-Clarke, a professional color therapist who practices color therapy in the UK. I asked her a few questions.

What attracted you to this kind of medicine?

Valarie: Color has always been of interest to me. I attended a speech some years ago about the use of color in healing. It made an immediate appeal and I then proceeded to find out where I could train.

Which is the most used color in therapy?

Valarie: It is hard to say. Blue has traditionally been a very popular “healing color” even with those who are not color therapists. Personally, I can’t pick one color which is dominant in my work.

Is it true that color therapy can heal diseases such as cancer?

Valarie: Color therapy can be very helpful but no therapist should ever say that the therapy is a CURE for cancer or anything else. It would be totally unethical and, indeed, grossly unprofessional, to suggest color therapy as a cure for such a disease.

What are the side effects of color therapy?

Valarie: None.

Can colors be interchanged during treatment?

Valarie: Yes. One uses whatever colors are deemed appropriate and a number of different colors can be used during a session.

What is ‘aura-soma?’

Valarie: Aura-soma is a way of using color to interpret a person’s inner thoughts and feelings. It involves a collection of just over 100 different bottles of colored liquids; some bottles are only one color while others have one color on top and another on the bottom. An aura-soma practitioner will interpret the person’s choice of bottles according to the colors chosen. The contents of the bottles can be applied to the corresponding parts of the body to aid healing.

Can color-blind and blind people benefit from color therapy?

Valarie: Color blind and totally blind people can be helped as the eyes are not the only way to absorb color. Totally blind people can also differentiate between different colors by touch. When we were students, we experimented with this and even when blindfolded, we could distinguish different colors more often than not.

Do you think color therapy is gaining recognition?

Valarie: Yes, I do. I get hundreds of e-mails per month from people from an enormous range of backgrounds.
