MANAMA, 19 January 2005 — Bahraini police began an investigation yesterday after robbers made away with more than BD18,000 ($47,750) in cash when they forced the Indian carrier of a local money exchange house to stop, in a mid-road heist that left the carrier hospitalized and police searching for clues.
The incident, which occurred at 5 p.m. opposite the house of the former Bahraini interior minister in Riffa, was said to have been well-planned, according to reliable sources.
Two cars were used in the robbery, with the robbers abandoning one of them on the scene, and fleeing in the other.
According to a company official the carrier was en route to the head office in Manama after making a pick-up from the exchange house branch in Riffa when one of the cars, which had no plate numbers, hit the motorbike causing him to fall.
Sources said that three to four people then came out of the car that was abandoned and the robbers attacked the carrier before breaking the side-box and making away with the money.
Police discovered that the abandoned car was one that had been reported stolen more than a week ago, following a background check. The condition of the carrier was said to be stable.
