JEDDAH, 29 January 2005 — The Kingdom has allocated additional funds worth SR3.75 million to provide health and housing services for tsunami victims in Southeast Asia.
Dr. Saed Al-Harithy, chairman of the Saudi Relief Committee, said the government would establish new health and housing projects in tsunami-hit countries in coordination with the UN refugee agency and the World Health Organization.
Two days ago, Saudi Arabia had announced financing welfare projects valued at more than SR13.12 million ($3.5 million) in tsunami-affected countries. “We have set up a team to visit the tsunami-affected areas and assess their aid requirements,” the Saudi Press Agency quoted Al-Harithy as saying.
He said the Kingdom had airlifted more than 1,000 tons of relief supplies, including food and medicine, worth some $5 million to Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and the Maldives.
