JEDDAH, 17 February 2007 — A woman here in Jeddah was so desperate to get divorced from her husband that she told the judge she would give up an entitlement to her husband’s wealth, and even the custody of her son, the daily Al-Madinah reported yesterday. The judge was so eager to try to fix the marriage between the man and the woman, who is a Muslim convert, that he convinced the husband to pronounce a single divorce. Shariah law allows a husband and wife to divorce and later reconcile up to three times — after that there can be no further reconciliations. However, it’s common for couples to irreconcilably finalize a divorce in one go with the husband irreconcilably finalizing the divorce by declaring it three times. In this case the judge convinced the husband to only declare divorce once to the woman, allowing for the possibility of future reconciliation. Considering what the wife is willing to give up in the case, it’s easy to imagine that the differences between the two are irreconcilable.
