MAKKAH, 28 February 2007 — The Makkah municipality has taken steps to install iron fences on median strips of busy streets in the city to help protect pedestrians from traffic. It also aims to regulate the haphazard road crossings by pedestrians.
“A contract worth SR770,710 has been signed with a private company for the fencing of the main streets in the city. The contract also stipulates that the fences should be in attractive designs and colors,” Ahmad ibn Ali Bayezid, acting mayor of Makkah, told Arab News.
The mayor did not say who was awarded the contract or if anyone else submitted bids for the work.
Several accidents take place when pilgrims to the holy city cross roads at places where pedestrian crossing is not allowed. The fences are expected to reduce such accidents.
