AL-RASS, 4 March 2007 — In Saudi Arabia, getting caught committing a traffic violation doesn’t just involve getting a ticket and a fine, it means spending some time in jail and having your car impounded. But it seems some people consider this not just a light punishment, but kinda fun, too. The daily Al-Watan reported yesterday about two young Saudi men who were released from lock-up in this Eastern Province city ahead of some friends who remained behind. They wanted to return to lock-up because apparently the group of friends were having a good time. So the two men decided to run a red light in front of a police officer shortly after being released from jail. After the men confessed to hatching this obnoxious plan, authorities pledged to make sure that their punishment would fit the crime.
